What would you like your character's tag to be?: Henry Gold
In 800+ words total, tell us...
Is this character an OC or AU set in a canon world? If so, which canon?: Once Upon a Time
If not, describe their world. This includes things like whether the world has magic or technology, what sort of culture your character comes from, the relative era in which it is set, etc.:
Character's background (their past and present, including applicable events in other games you may have played them in): Henry was born in Phoenix, Arizona but his mother gave him up for adoption to give him his best chance. He's given to one family but for some unknown reason it doesn't work out and at the same time Regina is asking Gold for a baby. She is his mother for a while, naming him Henry after her own father, but after she finds out who his mother is, she comes ranting to Gold.
In the conversation she slips Emma's name and thus enacting the loophole Rumplestiltskin placed on the curse. Gold remembers his former life and upon hearing Regina will send Henry away, Gold uses his please clause to get her to give him the baby to raise as his own, knowing he will help bring Emma to Storybrooke and eventually break the curse. Regina is unimpressed by this but has no choice and Henry Mills becomes Henry Gold.
Over the next ten years, Henry grows up quite happily in the large house with his father. He took his first steps in Gold's pawnshop and spent many happy moments with the man in both abodes. Though there were obviously bumps in the road as well, including a sad conversation about the lack of a mother figure in Henry's life culminating in a nightmare for his father.
Once he was nine however, he was starting to notice there was something strange about the town he lived in. People acting exactly the same day in and day out and never learning anything different in school. When he confronted his father about this, the man gave him a book entitled Once Upon a Time and told him to come back once he'd read it. There was a brief discussion that night but Henry spent the next few days reading and rereading the book of its entire contents. It was after this that they had their first rather large argument and their very first deal.
Over the course of the next year, Henry found out almost everything there was to know about Rumplestiltskin. His relationships with Baelfire, Milah, Hook and Peter Pan all came into the story but they made sure to do these sessions in short bursts over time after Henry had a rather scary nightmare about these truths. Even Belle was mentioned once, but Henry didn't ask again once he realised how painful the subject matter was.
And then came the night before Emma's 28th birthday and Henry packed his bag to leave. He was on the bus to Boston but he never made it there.
Character's personality: Henry's is still essentially the same character you'd find in the canon series. He has a large heart for love and belief but it's slightly less so due to the manner in which he learns the truth. When Regina forced Henry to not believe that the curse was real, it made him believe it even more so. But because Gold tried to force the belief on his son in this AU, Henry finds it harder to believe. Especially since he loves his father and doesn't want to believe this man did all those terrible things. But eventually, he does find a way past them for the sake of everyone else affected by the curse, but the deal he makes with Gold is a part of that as well.
Henry's relationship with his adopted father is mostly what makes Henry who he is. And that changes a lot upon knowledge of the curse. While the rest of the town feared the man for owning so much of the town, Henry felt safe, happy and loved, never doubting anything about their lives. But when he turned nine years old, he started realising certain things about the town. And after Gold gave him the book, their relationship changed. It became immediately strained as Henry didn't want to believe that Rumplestiltskin was the same person as the man who raised him. So while he previously had firm beliefs in the difference of good and evil, he now sees how the lines can be blurred and he doesn't like it.
This new knowledge also creates fear within Henry towards his father but not of the same kind as everyone else in town. He knows he's not going to be thrown out of the house or hurt in any physical manner, but he's scared of the emotional pain that could be caused by the finding of Baelfire. Gold has been looking for his son for almost three centuries and Henry worries that he won't be wanted once that deed is completed. This creates hatred for said Baelfire as well as the fear of being alone and unwanted. Especially as they were so happy before this came to light. The worst thing about his scenario is: Henry must believe the curse exists and can be broken or he wouldn't fear it's after effects. And while he pretends that he's still deciding, in his heart he does know the truth, even if he doesn't want to accept it.
After finding out about his father being Rumplestiltskin, his first reaction was anger and denial. Eventually over time, and Gold explaining the history not in the book, Henry started to come to terms with the fact. But he was still scared of being replaced and not long after they'd started their first conversation on the subject, Henry proposed a deal. Gold needed Henry to bring Emma to Storybrooke to break the curse so he could find Baelfire. And Henry couldn't see why that would benefit him. So he proposed the deal that he would help Gold find his son if after that was completed, Gold would help Henry find his real father. It was a tense moment but Gold agreed. As an extra term to the deal, Henry asked for the Dark One dagger if Gold didn't hold up to his end of the deal. The man had already broken one deal with his son and that didn't bode well for the future. Again Gold agreed and they continued their conversation.
This deal was the focus Henry needed to do what Gold wanted him to do. He couldn't do something that would change his life so radically without some sort of security in place for his future. They'd be so happy before this and now everything was changing, he needed something to believe in besides the curse. Something extra to push him on to do what was necessary. The deal was Henry's primary focus to find Emma but there was also the feeling in the back of mind that it was the right thing to do. Had he not known the truth about who his father was and had just been confronted with the curse, he might have helped break it as he had a firm grasp of good and evil. But with the merging of that line in his father, he found it harder to do just that.
Character's skills/abilities/powers: Henry has no special powers or abilities to speak off. Though everyone in the OUAT verse is able to learn magic with the right teacher so he will have the potential to be able to weird some magical power. Especially since both his biological mother and paternal grandfather both do.
Any special equipment your character is bringing along? This includes weaponry, magic items, etc.: Henry will appear with his backpack. This contains: maps, flashlight and the Once Upon a Time storybook. He'll also have a credit card in his pocket that belongs to his dad.
Why do you want to play this character in Ten Forward, and what do you plan to do with them? Reasons: I love Star Trek, this game takes AU characters, there is already a Mr Gold/Rumplestiltskin character, it looks fun with an easy AC. I think Henry would enjoy the futuristic elements and learning about places where science is true and not just magic. As well as getting time to be a kid and mess around with anyone else who wants to be his friend.
What is your character's greatest flaw? Henry is a very stubborn boy. Especially when he believes what he's doing is right. It's his morals that really make him do what needs to be done in terms of the curse and finding Emma. He's not very happy with the entire set up once it's been explained to him and there are times where he refuses to believe things due to those morals and that stubbornness. There are also times when he stands up for what he believes to his father and he hates that they have differing opinions on what is right or wrong, good or bad. Despite their usually good relationship, it's the moral stand point that makes the waves and creates the starting point for arguments between the two. And Henry won't back down if he thinks he's right. Almost too stubborn unless proven otherwise.
Describe your character's family (whether family by blood or by choice). How does your character feel about them? What did your character learn from them? Henry's family is quite extensive but he doesn't know about most of it yet. He currently has an adopted dad and his maternal grandparents. And the latter don't even know he's related to them. But eventually he finds out about being related to a hell of a lot more people and in all honestly, it's a lot to take in. Not everyone in his family are nice people, in fact most have done some bad things, but they're still his family and he loves them, even if he's scared of their abilities and past events.
What hobbies does your character have? Reading, chess, cards, asking his father to tell painful memories as stories
Your character wakes up in the middle of the night in panic from a nightmare. What was the nightmare? Gold had found Baelfire and told Henry he wasn't need as his son any more. He goes back on his deal and disappears and Henry is left alone.
